FYI Tidbits // Survey say about Internships and getting jobs after graduating college
Approximately 60 percent of 2012 college graduates who took part in paid internships received at least one job offer, according to results of a new study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).
An internship may give you some experience that will help you later in your approach to finding a job but does not necessarily give you an edge in the eyes of employers. NACE found that just one percent more of interns got job offers than did new college graduates with no internship experience.
========
About the 2012 Student Survey:
Each year, NACE surveys college students on career-, employment-, and job-search related issues. NACE’s 2012 Student Survey was conducted mid-January through April 30, 2012. Nearly 48,000 college students nationwide, including 15,715 seniors at the bachelor’s degree level, took part in the survey.

FYI Tidbits // Companies Find Fruitful Results When Hiring Autistic Workers
It’s not a charity program, one executive cautions. And supervisor buy-in is crucial. But workers with autism can provide a dedicated, focused workforce in the right setting.
It’s a very real issue among future workers, as a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta found that in 2008, one in 88 children had been diagnosed with autism, Asperger syndrome or a related disorder by the age of 8. That’s up from one in 155 in 2002, though experts aren’t sure whether the jump is due to an increasing incidence of the disorder, increased awareness of it or a combination of the two.

2012 Status of Telework in the Federal Government
According to the Office of Personnel Management, 21 percent of eligible federal employees telework, up significantly from before the Telework Enhancement Act was passed when just 10 percent of federal employees teleworked.
Excerpts from report:
The signing of the Telework Enhancement Act in December 2010 (the Act), set in motion a transformation of Federal telework that will have the effect of unleashing its potential as a strategic intervention for supporting agency effectiveness. The Act provides a framework of requirements designed to ensure a more systematic implementation of telework in Federal agencies than previously existed and adequate notice to employees of their telework eligibility status. Satisfying these requirements has meant a fundamental shift in how agency stakeholders view and implement telework ~from a strictly individual employee benefit to a strategic organizational change program.
While technology enables telework and forms the basis for successful programs, inadequate technology and data security issues are often mentioned as critical barriers to telework.
Total Number of (Federal) Employees: 2,165,390
Employees Deemed Eligible to Telework: 684,589
Employees with Telework Agreements: 144,851
Employees Teleworking in Sept 2011: 168,558
The full report outlines challenges, structuring and methodology used by the federal government to implement the 2010 mandate to promote telework.

FYI Tidbits // Telework may mean smaller raises and lower performance evaluations report MIT Sloan Management
A new study that was published by the MIT Sloan Management Review shows that people who don’t put in face time with the boss are more likely to receive smaller raises and be the recipients of poorer work reviews.
The research suggests that employees who telework may be considered out of sight and out of mind.
Working from home, or other types of remote work arrangements such as using a drop-in work center, can be beneficial to both employees and companies. However, our research suggests that these nontraditional arrangements also have hidden pitfalls. Employees who work remotely may end up getting lower performance evaluations, smaller raises and fewer promotions than their colleagues in the office — even if they work just as hard and just as long.

FYI Tidbits // U.S. Security~Cleared Population Tops 4.8 Million
The number of people who held security clearances for access to classified information increased last year to a new reported high of more than 4.8 million persons as of October 1, 2011, a new intelligence community report to Congress said.
Last year’s annual report, the first official count of security cleared personnel, had indicated that there were over 4.2 million clearances in 2010. That number astonished observers because it surpassed previous estimates by more than a million. (“Number of Security Clearances Soars,” Secrecy News, September 20, 2011).

FYI Tidbits // Six Bad Résumé Ideas—and Three Good Ones
With unemployment still high, many job seekers are feeling the heat when it comes to standing out amid a very large sea of candidates. But there’s a fine line between being creative and coming up with something that quickly ends up in the recipient’s “delete” folder. To demonstrate the difference, CareerBuilder reveals the following six résumé blunders, along with three winning creative efforts, which it compiled from a recent survey of nearly 2,300 U.S. hiring managers. Clearly, there’s pressure on applicants to distinguish themselves. One in five HR managers spends less than 30 seconds reviewing applications, and about 40 percent spend less than a minute, according to the survey.
